{POEM}: Aṣíwájú (Leaders)

Aṣíwájú (Leaders)

Ọwọ,́ ni wọ́n wípe ́o ́́n sáju ́ijó
( Hands they say, precede the dance)
Ẹsẹ̀, ni wọ́n ni ́ó rìnnà
(The path is led by the foot)
Bẹ́ẹ̀ aṣíwájú lasojú waa
(while the leaders are our representatives)
Aṣíwáju ́- ẹ̀yin gan ni darandaran wa
(Aṣíwájú -  you are definitely our Shepherd)
Ibi to ́bá si ̀wu ẹ̀fúfù̀̀ù lẹ̀̀̀̀lẹ̀ yín lo ́n darí ìgbẹ ́wa sí
(Your wish is always our command)
Torí ibi tabá pèlórí a kìí fi ́tẹlẹ̀
(Because we dare not disobey your order)
Sùgbọ́n kílódé tẹńseyán  bí ọkà?
(But why do you misuse your position?)
Kílódé tẹ ń p'eku lókètéé; sébẹ̀ lagọ̀tó ni ?
Why do you misrepresent rat as rabbit ; are we that daft?
Àríwá lẹpè nílẹ ̀ìlérí
(North is the promised land, you claimed)
Kílówáfa eré àsápajúdé lọ sí gúsù?
(What then causes your reckless race to the South?)
Yépàà! Àwa gan làsìse yìi ́wọ̀ lẹ́wù
(Aw! We are the unfortunate passengers of the ride)

Aṣíwájú,
Ẹ ò bá gbìyànjù kẹsé kódára
(You should strive to give your best)
Torí tálọ bálọ àbọ̀ a máa bọ̀wá
(Because what goes around comes around)
Ẹlèfiwá kólé sórí òfurufú
(You may suffer us to build castles in the air)
Ẹlèfiwá kọ́rọ̀jọ kópọ̀ bi ́ omi òkun
(You may suffer us to gather wealth wide as the sea)
Sùgbọ́n,  Adẹ́dàá tó lànà sínú òkun lọ́jọ́sí sì wà síbẹ̀
(But the Creator who once partitioned the sea is still active)
Ọba-Adájọ́ tó fi sùúrù rọ̀jò òkùta-iná yanturu lé Gòmórà sì wà láyé
(The King - Judge who patiently rained brimstones lavishly on Gomorrah is still alive)
Tó bá wá wu Èdùmàrè ó lè pa á rẹ́ -  gbogbo ọrọ̀ irọ́ yín
(If God wills, He may destroy it -  all your false wealth)
Kílówá kùn?
(Then, what else?)
Ọba tójẹ tílùú tòrò - a mọ̀ ó
(The king whose reign brings peace - is known)
Èyi ́ tójẹ tílùú dàrú -  a ò gbàgbé fábàdà!
(The one whose reign brings multiple calamities -  is definitely not forgotten!)
Ju gbogbo rẹ̀ lọ- orúkọ rere sàn Ju wúrà òhun fàdákà
(Above all -  a good name is better than gold and silver)

Aṣíwájú,
Ẹyíwàpadà kó tó bọ́ ó ri ́
(Change your way before it's too late)
Ẹfi ọrọ̀ ìlú mọ̀ wá bótitọ́ àti bòtiye
(Entreat us with the wealth of the land as fit and proper)
Alábùkún ni wá sùgbón a ò madùn oyin rárá!
(We are blessed but the taste of honey, we know not!)
Ẹ ti gba eré ẹṣin lẹ́sẹ̀ ìsúná wa
(You have denied our economy the horse's speed)
Ẹ si ̀ gbé ìrìn kẹ́tẹ́ - kẹ́tẹ́ le lọ́wọ́
(In exchange for the slow motion movement of a camel)
Sùgbọ́n báyìí, ẹṣin wa gan ti gúnyẹ̀ é
(But now, our horse is winged -   a Pegasus)
Ẹ má se fi ojúkòkòrò yin dá a lágara
(Don't ever render it useless by your greed)
Ẹjẹ́ kó gbé wa fò
(Let the stallion pegasus fly us)
A si ̀ ji ̀ si ́ ilẹ̀ ìlérí
(We are still far from the promised land)

Aṣíwájú,
Ẹrántí    p'ẹ́yin  là̀ ń wò
(Remember we keep watch on you)
sùgbọ́n ìwà yín ò wù wá
(But we do not cherish your ways)
Ẹgbìnyànjú kẹfohun tó da léwa lọ́wọ́
(Strive to give us good legacies)
K'ẹjẹ́ àwòkọ́se rere yàtò s'íranù abọmọjẹ́
( Be a role model and not a bad influence)
