The Korean language (조선말/한국어 , 朝鮮말/韓國語) is the official and national language of both Koreas : the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (South Korea), with different standardized official forms used in each territory. It is also one of the two official languages in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture and Changbai Korean Autonomous County of the People's Republic of China. Approximately 80 million people worldwide speak Korean. But definitely, Nigerians are hardly counted among the 80 million people because little or very few Nigerians care about such language. Surprisingly, Oluwasegun Boluwatife is one of the few that care about, know and can speak and write Korean language.
Oluwasegun Boluwatife is a 200 level student of Special Education department, Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan. Her Korean name is Sarang. She speaks Korean and is about to begin a programme where Nigerians will be taught Korean. Read the below interview with her:
Explorenceblog: Can we meet you?
Bolu: I'm Oluwasegun Boluwatife. I'm a 200 level student of the department of Special Education, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. I'm a language enthusiast.
Explorenceblog: How many languages do you speak?
Bolu: I can speak, write and read 3 languages efficiently and 1 on the beginners level. (Yoruba, English, Korean and Chinese respectively)
Explorenceblog: How did you learn Korean?
Bolu: I learnt Korean language through online research, the movies helped too and socialising with Korean friends...
Explorenceblog: How easy was it for you?
Bolu: To speak nothing but the truth, It wasn't really easy at the start, Especially combining modern and old Korean language.... learning it on my own and all. It wasn't so easy...but now I'm coping......it's better
Explorenceblog: Would you like to further your Korean language and possibly grow a career in it?
Bolu: Yeah sure, If there's any opportunity.. Of course I wish to study further.
Explorenceblog: What's your motivation?
Bolu: Love plainly..., My love and passion for Korean culture motivated me to know more about Korean language.
Explorenceblog: you want to start a programme related to Korea, kindly tell us more about it.
Bolu: I want to start a programme that will help others who have interest in this language but do not have the time or opportunity to learn, to build themselves and also to professionalize speaking fluency and eloquence also.
Explorenceblog: How is it going to go?
Bolu: I don't know how it's going to go yet...but hopefully it'll turn out well
Explorenceblog: Any reward or benefit attached?
Bolu: I don't have a reward or benefit aim, it's my love that's propelling me to start the programme, but definitely there'll be a reward, and i don't mind...
Explorenceblog: what's the lifespan of the programme?
Bolu: There's no duration or format,As long as my love for Korean grows....the program will keep on waxing.
Explorenceblog: How will people know about the programme and also learn from it?
Bolu: Once the programme starts fully everyone will be informed.
